National Airports Corporation limited (NACL) managing director, Mr Robinson Misitala has set modernisation of airport infrastructure and air navigation equipment in the country as a priority. this is in view of the fact that most of the infrastructure at the four designated international airports in Zambia is old.
the challenge facing nacl is modernisation of infrastructure to international standards of civil aviation with limited resources against competing operational needs. In this regard, the corporation will next year start construction of a modern passenger terminal at Ndola international airport while at Lusaka international airport, the immigration hall will soon be remodelled while tiling of the international departure lounge is in the offing. The corporation has also ordered new groundhandling equipment to improve its service delivery capabilities. New equipment ordered include two ground power units, two high loaders, one passenger assist vehicle, one rapid intervention vehicle and an ambulance. the equipment is for Ndola and Lusaka international airports. Furthermore, the corporation is also looking at the possibility of opening more catering points at Lusaka international airport. NACL will spend over 2 million united states dollars to rebuild the concourse at Livingstone international airport in line with other new developments that have taken place at the airport. The corporation also intends to extend the international departure lounge at Livingstone international airport by 450 square metres to cater for the increase in traffic that has occurred in recent years. with the extension of the international departure lounge, there will be added space for new duty free shops. The corporation has also started building a new control tower at Livingstone International airport at a cost of k1,5 billion. Plans are also underway to extend the car park at Livingstone international airport. We expect the works to commence as soon as all logistics are put in place. At mfuwe international airport, the remodelling of the terminal building and erection of a perimetre fence are the expected works. |
