Chitatabala defies HIV/AIDS fear
Living with fear of HIV/AIDS can be a traumatizing experience. A cough, fever and headache or indeed a stomach upset bring chilling feelings to an individual. This is exactly how January Chitatabala, a general worker with National Airports Corporation Limited used to feel before he made up his mind and voluntarily went to test for HIV/AIDS. Mr Chitatabala, 49 used to have this fear of the unknown especially at the time when he was diagnosed with TB. “Many people used to laugh and tease me that I was an HIV/AIDS patient especially that I had TB. This is now a thing of the past for I am now able to move with my head high because of knowing my status.”

Mr Chitatabala could not withstand the derogatory comments he used to get from people and last year, after encouragement from his wife, he made a bold decision to go for voluntary counseling and testing.  Mr Chitatabala was among the first employees to take advantage of the on-site HIV testing which was carried out at Lusaka International Airport by the Peer Educators from National Airports Corporation Limited.

To his relief, Mr chitatabala tested negative. “I felt born again,” he said as he could not hide the new found joy. All my worries dissipated in thin air. There was this new feeling of another beginning. I felt happy and relieved.

“It is important that one must know one’s status to remove any fear of the unknown. If you don’t know your status, you tend to worry a lot which is not good for your life,’ he said.

It is in this vein that he would like to see NACL employees go for voluntary counseling and testing for HIV. He says there is no need for people to fear testing after all those who test positive are immediately put on treatment.

Mr Chitatabala praised NACL management for putting in measures to mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS through the voluntary medical scheme.

Only a few months ago, Mr chitatabala was a victim of ridicule from those people who stigmatizes  HIV /AIDS but for now, he has the last laugh.
